and the most rare of cultured pearls. So rare are
round pearls that only 5-10% of a pearl farm's
harvest will be even and round. The rest of the
harvest will vary from semi-round pearls to
asymmetrical baroque pearls. The rounder the pearl, the more valuable it is.
Slightly off-round, semi-baroque and baroque pearls
are not as valuable as perfectly round pearls,
however, they can be lustrous and appealing and
have a natural beauty and value of their own. Round pearls are
perfectly spherical - the round shape that people
think of when they think of a pearl. This is the
most preferable shape for a cultured pearl and also
the most expensive. Near Round pearls
are not perfectly round but are very close to being
so. To the untrained eye they have the appearance
of perfectly round pearls and are considerably
cheaper. Generally, most freshwater pearls fall
into this group. Button pearls are
symmetrical pearls that appear to be flattened /
squashed to a certain extent. This shape is also
known as Coin Pearls. Drop pearls are
symmetrical and have a tear-drop shape and are very
often used in earrings and pendant jewelry. Baroque pearls do
not have a definitive shape; they are
non-symmetrical / irregular in shape and can range
from off round circle pearls to stick or cross
shapes. Circle pearls are
baroque pearls but they have visible "circles" or
"rings" around the diameter of the pearl. This
